May The Force Be With You!

Seeing that I will, in less than two years, become an octogenarian, on occasion my mindset runs rampant thinking about items to write about that relate to others in my position. But being the unique and weird person that I am, my writings tend to take a weird twist – hopefully in a comical way. When I think of men my age, I think of them as old geezers which as you guessed it – I too, consider myself to be an old geezer!

It is said that the definition of a geezer, when used today is used affectionately to mean “an elderly fellow.” Other definitions out there refer to an old geezer as: “an odd, eccentric, or unreasonable person (usually a man); especially: an old man. Oh, one other thing before I move on – geezers are also supposedly between the age of 60 to 75. Does that make me ancient? But I digress!

Naturally when one thinks about the word old – the question comes to mind – “Well, how old is he?” 

To set the stage for what is about to follow – I have to talk a bit about physics. I say “bit” because that is about the amount of physics I remember from my school years, a “bit.”

I have read and it has been said that the closer one gets to the speed of light the slower time goes – until presumably time would hit a dead end.  With this thought in mind, one might think that the older us (or is it we) geezers get, the closer our driving speed gets to a dead stop. Stay with me now as it will get better the more I write or at least I hope it will.

Need a picture to help make this more clearer – OK – Picture us taking the oldest geezer in the world (and no, that would not be me) and place that individual behind the steering wheel of a car (and not one of those new fang-dangled ones that self-drive themselves). Chances are that this old geezer could burn through an entire tank of gasoline without going anyplace.

Are you with me so far? It gets better, I haven’t even added glaucoma and/or macular degeneration into the mix yet. When either of these two ailments are added, well, the combination adds not being able to see what’s coming ahead of us. Looking at how our bodies tend to do their own thing as we age, add the fact that a lot of old geezers are also hard of hearing and that adds yet another sense required or necessary to be able to drive.

Oops, speaking about our bodies, I forgot several other things our bodies tend to do as we age. Our muscles, nervous system, lack of flexibility, and slower reaction time also enters the picture. Stay with me as I am getting closer to the point of this article.

What does all this mean? Just this. The next time you are on an expressway and behind an old geezer, keep in mind the fact that while even though he may be doing 30 miles per hour, to him – 30 mph is fast! Why?

Because he can’t see, hear, or act fast enough to get out of the way! So forget the definitions you read above as to what is meant by an old geezer.

An old geezer is this slow-moving, high-pants wearing, hard candy sucking – Yoda of yesteryear. It is at that point in time that you must heed the words of Yoda: “Patience you must have my young Padawan.”

A Day Late and A Dollar Short!

Here I am again late with my weekly post. Made me think of the idiom shown as the caption of this piece: A Day Late and A Dollar Short – or in other words:

Action that was taken too late and is too feeble to be of any use! Well, so much for that definition – I am not so sure that my post is too feeble to be of any use. The fact that I am posting something within eight days of my last posting has got to be worth something (I am going to get on a weekly schedule sooner or later – perseverance is the key and I will overcome my tardiness).

Last month we decided to become the reverse of snow birds. Snow birds, if you will recall, are individuals with homes up north who come to the south for the winter. We are going to be North birds – our home is in the south, but we will be coming north for the summer.

It was a good weekend because I got to spend it with my kid brothers, sisters, nephews and a cousin we hadn’t seen in a while. Now that I am getting older, I always feel so much better when I get the chance to spend some time with relatives. One thing I must say – catching up with their latest happenings, humbles you as it makes one realize how good we have it. Some of the things they have been through within the last year is a reminder that things aren’t always greener on the other side of the fence, and the fact we aren’t getting any younger doesn’t help either.

Another nice part about this adventure we recently embarked upon – is that we will now be able to see everyone more often cause instead of being 1100 miles away we are less than 150 miles away even if it is only for four or five months out of the year.  The change of scenery and social activity may be good for our souls as well.

Well, that sums up this post – let’s see if I can prepare for my next post in less than one week.

Eating!

What is it about reaching a certain age and the need to worry about what it is we are going to eat? My personal opinion is we stay away from or only eat in moderation those foods we know can mess with our metabolism and make it a point to eat at regularly scheduled times. The schedule that seems to work well for us is to eat at 7, 11:30 or 12:00 and then around 5 or 5:30 with possibly a snack in between to carry us through.

Now when I say snack though I am talking about a healthy snack – such as a half of a banana and in some instances some peanut butter to go with as our morning snack. The afternoon snack – well that changes from time to time and can range from some trail mix to a piece of dark chocolate. And then there is the evening snack which is usually six ounces of yogurt.

My educated guess, knowing pretty much what we eat and when we eat it, is not the food we eat but is more with the fact that we do not exercise enough to burn off the unwanted calories that come with eating what we eat. Some might say – I cannot exercise – I don’t have the room. Poppycock! If you can walk – you can exercise. Take a walk around the block for ten or fifteen minutes every day. At least you are not being sedentary which is one of the things we should avoid.

Our biggest problem is when we are away on vacation and spending time with relatives especially if they are providing quarters for you to sleep, bathe, and so forth. But, then again – this is where good old Yankee Ingenuity comes into play. Here’s the thing, I constantly write that we are the masters of our own destiny. Just because a relative is putting you up doesn’t mean you give up daily exercising.

Take my stretching routine for instance. I only need a small space at the end of the bed I am sleeping in and I can do my fifteen minutes of stretching every morning when I wake. Now taking my fifteen or so minute walk every day – well – that is another story because one must also consider the environment around us. At present, we are in, as I like to put it, “the boonies” and we must be careful walking on the road in front of the house as it is a well-traveled road and some of the drivers do travel faster than the required speed limit.

But, I take into consideration the fact that I am not as active when visiting relatives as I am at home or on a two-week vacation staying at a time-share where we can be as active or inactive as we want to be. I compensate by watching what I eat and trying my best not to constantly sit around doing nothing. True, it isn’t the best way to stay in shape, but under the circumstances, it will have to do.

Where’s the Fun in That?

Where Does the Time Go?

It was only a few days ago that we said goodbye to February of 2017 and hello to March 2017. At the time, I asked myself where did the time go. So I decided to look at the Monthly Planner I keep open in front of me at the breakfast table to see whether those two months were wasted months or if we actually had something to show for the past time.

Truth is that we were evidently busy and active doing many things which, when I stop and think about it, is one of the reasons my wife and I feel we have been able to stay as active and for the most part as healthy as we have been all these years (I turn 77 this year and she will turn 79).

Glancing over what all was accomplished during the first 60 or so days of 2017, the first and happy event was that our son from California, visited with us for a few days.  We had a great visit and will go visit him later in the year. Plus, we will, in all probability be taking a road trip back north to PA and CT later this year to visit relatives and our oldest son who lives in CT.

We live in a small manufactured home community and as such there is a constant turnover of homes thus bringing into the community new residents. One of my wife’s pet projects is for us to host what we call a “Welcome Home” party designed to not only welcome returning “snow birds” but also those new owners (individuals that have chosen our park to spend/live their retirement years in). That event was held on January 7th 2017.

Our park is also big on group travel excursions and as such – once a year we go on an “overnight trip” where we take in dinner and a show. On the return trip we  stop, shop and/or visit a Casino. This past January we traveled to Fort Myers, Florida (a little better than 100 miles away) where we enjoyed a show similar to but not exactly like “The Phantom of the Opera,” entitled “The Phantom.” 

Another thing we do here within the community is have what we call “Casino Night” which is an event sponsored and put on by the Lions Club. If you haven’t already guessed it, you would be right if you were thinking – I bet Irwin and Dolly hosted it.  Yours truly agreed to be the host for that event and I am happy to say the evening was a great success and we raised a nice amount of money for the Lions Club. This too was in the month of January.

Towards the latter part of the month several of us went to Treasure Tavern in Orlando, Florida  (another dinner theater) where both the food and entertainment was fantastic. Well worth the money! Not to mention the fun we have with our friends and neighbors on the bus ride to and from the event.

Off course, throughout the entire month of January there was our daily line dance practice four days a week, and our normal Wednesday night game of “Mexican Train.” Plus, my wife, being the “keeper” and person responsible for maintaining, and updating our annual Park Residents Directory, had to get that put together and ready for press by the end of January so that we would have our new directories during the first week of February.

That takes care of the month of January and shortly after the beginning of February, quite a few of us from the park went to Haiti, Jamaica, and Cozumel via Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s “Allure of the Seas.” Now that is one big ship – close to 6000 passengers and almost 2000 crew members. What can one say about such a cruise – 24/7 food and service. Great food, fantastic entertainment, wonderful company – just right for the perfect getaway every now and then.

Okay once back home and with it being February, Dolly and I hosted the Valentine Day Dance here at our community park and fun was had by all in attendance which was close to 100 attendees. As is the case most months of the year, we also spend our time line dancing, playing Mexican Train, Social evenings once a week, pot luck supper every now and then, and several other events I am probably forgetting to mention. And oh yes, I cannot forget that I had to take a short break from all the fun and frivolities to do my taxes and get them off to the IRS.

Unfortunately, February was not all fun and games. Shortly after returning from the cruise, Dolly took sick with a viral infection (bronchitis or allergies or something) that laid her up for the better part of two weeks, but I am happy to say that she is better and was back in class just this morning teaching the “newbies” in our park – you know – those individuals that don’t know about line dancing but see how much fun it is and want to learn..

So, here we are in March and while it isn’t as busy a month, we are planning a short, and possibly overnight trip to see a cousin that comes to Florida to get away from the nasty northern winters.

What’s in store for us over the next few months? Well, we will continue teaching line dance (four or five days a week); will continue to go to Mexican Train Game night every Wednesday evening; attend our usual Saturday morning coffee and donuts to shoot the breeze, if you will with our friends and neighbors, more doctor appointments; a Saint Patty’s Day Dinner (and no, before you ask, we are not hosting this one); and finally, last minute odd jobs around the house so that it is in tip-top shape should we decide to run away and do who knows what over the summer! One never knows with us!
